Essence and realism: Assasin’s Creed Odyssey and Homer
Hello everyone, Speudful is with you and today we will talk about the Odyssey of the Assassins and Homer. For those who are not familiar with Odyssia, this is a poem, which is believed to have been written about 700 years. BC. e. poet (or, more likely, several poets) named Homer. He follows the hero Odysseus when he is trying to return home to Itaka from Troy, where he spent the past ten years in the war with the Trojans (described by Homer in Iliad). Odysseus is faced with a number of trials on his journey, including the battle with monsters and the seduction of goddesses, but in the end he takes his house after the next ten years at sea, seven of which, in general recognition, were spent on a luxurious island.
And let’s compare the game Assasin’s Creed Odyssey with Homer’s book in this video. In the most obvious connection with Homer, we begin the adventure in Kefalonia, where the game and most modern scientists find the house of Odyssey on Itak. We also meet very quickly with Odessa, a descendant of Odyssey, who decided to become the same great hero as her ancestor. The desires of Odessa portend a journey into which Cassandra (or Alexios) is going to go to the main characters. It is noteworthy that Cassandra’s journey begins where the Odyssey’s journey ends, as if the torch is moving from one legend to another. We, players, are immediately determined to compare the story of our character with the story of the great hero Odyssey – a comparison that works too well.
The first main enemy with whom we are dealing in Betswagger casino the game is Cyclops, The leader of the bandits with a fake eye from an Orihak. In one of the first missions, Cassandra steals the Orihal eye of the cyclops and continues to gloat when he later meets him for a decisive duel (inserting him into the goat …). This resembles the beginning of the long journey of Odyssey. He is locked in the Cyclops of Polyphemus, the eyes of which he blinds to escape. When Odysseus sails away from the island of Polyphemus, like Cassandra, he is gloating that he had blinded Cyclops. Later, it is the relationship of Cassandra with the cyclop that attracts the attention of Elpenor, encouraging her to go on a trip to Greece in order to reunite her family. In the same way, the relations of Odyssey with cyclops brought to themselves the anger of Poseidon (father of Cyclops – Polyphemus) and forced him to go on a ten -year journey to return home to his Penelope and son Telemach.
The topic of returning to homeland is the blood of both stories. Our main characters both seek to reunite with their families after many years of separation by forces that are not dependent on them, although what is considered “Home”, For each of them, different. For Kassandra, “House” means the unification of her family, and not necessarily returning to homeland to Sparta. For Odyssey, on the other hand, to return home means physically taking his palace from the grooms of his wife, who occupied him during his long absence and reunite with his wife Penelope. By the way, the quest with the search for her Savan is one of the first in the adventures of Cassandra. And in the case of Assassin’s Creed, the player can decide to what extent the Cassandra is moving the desire to reunite his family or the desire to take revenge, but, nevertheless, its goal is to overcome the forces that separated her family, the same.
Kassandra first hears that the gods took her from the family, and the player can choose dialogue options, which as a result show theological anger and skepticism throughout the game. In the same way, Odysseus kept away from his family due to the intervention of vengeful gods, such as Zeus and Poseidon (as well as thirsty goddesses, such as Calipso). So Zeus does not appear in the game, although we meet Poseidon, Aida and Hermes in addition here, and Calipso is also translated as an oracle, to which we get to later, in order to find out why the gods decided to kill her brother. However, unlike the experience of Cassandra, there was no cultural plot in a book masking under the divine intervention of the Odyssey. It was just an old element of Greek mythology: gods are a huge bunch of morons. Either cultists, also personify those men who wanted to marry Penelope and take control of Itak. As in the game, the cultists wanted to conquer the will of her brother Aleksios or Damos, who has the power of the gods, with the help of which he could give power to the Order of the Ancients.
Relations with gods are not always so capricious for our main characters. Despite the abandoned divine challenges, both are described as God -like and approved by the gods. Odysseus is the favorite of Athena, who regularly intervenes, both indirectly and personally, to help him return home. It is believed that Cassandra blessed Zeus, who allegedly gave her Orl Icar, and later we learn that she really came from ISU, which in the Assassin’s Creed series resemble ancient Greek deities.
Many Divine creatures and events from the book are also described in the game. Once Odysseus and their team got to the island, where they drank and ate, which forced them to forget and stay on the island for a long time. Just like Barnabas in one quest, a drunk or special elixir in the afterlife forcing to forget all the sorrows of life. During adventures, our heroine meets two times with cyclops – an ordinary one -eyed person and a real Eden monster. There are also references to the priestesses imitating men in the cave of sirens for perpetuity. And the marine set with the name of Scylla and Haribda – referring us to two monsters from Homer: a multi -headed dragon and a water vast mouth, respectively.
It is this mixing of historical with the fantastic that Assassin’s Creed makes the ideal series of games in which Homer’s heritage is stored. Odyssey is not some kind of dull, incomprehensible poem in the style of Colridge, especially with the correct translation. This is the journey of the original hero. This is an exciting and vivid game with a complex and imperfect main character, who often makes terrible decisions, decisions that lead to the death of his entire team, and yet Odysseus is still considered a hero. The history of Odyssey was created for video games, and not more than Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, with the style of role -playing game, which allows players to freely make their own painful mistakes, but ultimately remain heroes. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the merit of his Homeric inspiration. From the hills of ancient Greece to the treacherous seas and epic battles with terrifying mythical monsters. And with you was a speedful – a good day and a good life.
